Permit Technician-Senior

Building Department


Starting at $43,100 - $60,000/year

Salary negotiable (within range) - based on qualifications

Under the direction of the Building Official, executes and administer the process of building permits, plan reviews, temporary certificates of occupancy (TCO), and certificates of occupancy (CO) as submitted or requested by the applicants.

DUTIES

  • Review and disseminate residential plan review documents.
  • May supervise, train and assign work to the Office Assistant II; review work and ensure daily tasks are accurate and completed.
  • Maintain open communication with the residential Plans Examiner.
  • Set up meetings.
  • Communicate with and assist the residential applicants.
  • Model excellent customer service skills, tact and professionalism when responding to inquiries including but not limited to residential and small permits, online applications, certificates of occupancy, Fire Alarm permits, Fire Suppression permits, MEP permits, and building permit processes & requirements.
  • Receives, issues, and files all small permits including roofs, sheds, fences, pools, generators and similar items.
  • Enter and correlate data on BS&A, OnBase, excel control sheets, share drives and other systems, as required/requested by the Building Official.
  • Coordinate building permits and inspection processes with the Fire Department, Engineering, Assessing, Planning and other departments.
  • Answer Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • Communicate and update with the Clerk's office on all medicinal marijuana caregiver licenses.
  • Follow up with the Fire Department, Engineering, Assessing, Planning and other departments as requested for the final recommendation for a certificate of occupancy and temporary certificate of occupancy for commercial & residential developments.
  • Generate certificates of occupancy and temporary certificates of occupancy and obtain necessary signatures from the Building Official.
  • Train and assign work to the Office Assistant II; review work and ensure daily tasks are accurate and completed.
  • Communicate/collaborate with the Commercial Project Collaborator (Planning Department) on all commercial projects.
  • Other duties as requested by the Building Official and Community Development Director.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of full-time work experience providing clerical or administrative support.
  • May consider applicants with an equivalent combination of training, certifications, work experience, and education.
  • Proficiency with BS&A program.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office specifically Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards).
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).

PREFERENCES

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Computer/software programs related to position (i.e. BS&A and/or OnBase)
  • State Registration 54 and/or Builder's License
  • Certifications related to position (i.e. ICC Permit Technician Certification)
  • Previous supervision experience
  • One (1) year in a municipal or state building department environment
  • Five (5) years of full-time work experience providing clerical or administrative support.

HOURS

Regularly Monday - Friday; 8:00AM - 4:30PM
