Nature Center Intern


$11.00 to $15.00/hour

Based on Qualifications

The Nature Center intern will work in the Stage Nature Center, an extension of the Parks Division within the Department of Public Works. This intern will assist with the maintenance of the trails and assist in the facilitation and implementation of curriculum for community and school-based programs in order to create a more successful and sustainable program structure.


  • Assist in the creation and preparation of materials, lessons and manipulatives needed for programs.
  • Communicate with the public to provide information on program activities.
  • Maintain a safe and an enriched learning environment.
  • Provide nature trail maintenance.
  • Ensure that program policies and procedures are followed.
  • Promote cross-departmental interaction and assist with various projects.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.


  • High school degree or GED equivalent
  • Pursuing a Bachelor Degree in recreation, environmental education, environmental studies, natural resources, biology, or related field.
  • Must possess a strong interest and enthusiasm about the environment and a desire to share that appreciation of nature with children and the public.
  • Must have good communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Must be a team player with creativity, imagination, and energy.
  • Willingness to help with a variety of different tasks and projects.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan Driver License, with a good driving record, based on City of Troy standards.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).


  • Prefer experience working with children and with the public.


Part-time; This is a 1-year term with an option for the Department to extend

Average of twenty-eight (28) hours per week

Usually Tuesday through Friday 9:00 am 5:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am 4:00 pm with occasional flexibility.
